This is my favorite photo that I feel is my best work, exemplifying what I strive for in photography. When I saw this scene for the first time, something about the symmetry and the circular tables appealed to me. It took me a while to find a way to take this picture; no camera I had could take such a wide angle.

Multicultural Week Photo Story

The day's lunch, costing $9 total. More food came later
to settle my insatiable appetite, bringing the total 
up to $14. The rest of my group spent around $7-8 on food.

Eric Zhang and his Impromptu Club friends await
 customers. They sold Arizona iced teas for $1 during
the week, selling out every day.

Graduating Class booths, after a long day of sales.
In-n-Out was sold by the sophomore class, and was
one of the more popular foods available during the week.

Ticket booths selling tickets used to buy food 
were located all around the horseshoe, but most 
were placed near the office due to the influx of 
students from that direction.

The members of the Puili dance group get ready 
to perform. Puili is a traditional percussive
 Hawaiian dance involving the use of long bamboo 
sticks called puili sticks.

The members of the Hip Hop dance group finish with a flourish. 
Hip hop tends to be the most popular of the dances performed, 
due to the energy and technical skill the dancers exhibit in their performance.

Photo Story Description #2: MC Week!

Only three stands remain as the day's lunch draws to a close. Few stands remain; most are sold out and have already begun packing up. The crowd of students just minutes before have dispersed, loaded with food, to their respective lunching spots on campus.

Photo Story Description #1

A squirrel found on the UC Berkeley campus is looking at a miniature of the

UC Berkeley bell tower. Just prior to this, the squirrel was planning to steal

a student's lunch, after trying to eat the student's hat that is now on its head. The

nice treatment squirrels like this one receive at the hands of UC Berkeley students

is the reason why the campus has many aggressive squirrels.

I have economics, then calculus, then physics, then lunch. In a way, it's preparation to make a cost-benefit analysis of the taste and caloric content of the food. Despite the hype, the food, the four days of excess spending and "epicurean" delight, I still manage to forget to rush out the door after fourth period. Four years of this only has made me more forgetful of the rush for food, as I've found that other things take precedence as one has their horizons expanded by education and experience. But a part of me still clings to the past, to the times when I didn't have to care so much about college or money or grades and just live in the fishbowl of school. So I still rush out after every afternoon bell, despite my engrossment in what I am doing in class, or in the conversations I have with others. In the end, does the food really matter?

Principles of Design

"Balance" - the symmetry of the structural elements and the many horizontal lines make the photo feel very balanced despite the slightly noisy and unbalanced background.

"Movement" - The walkways and stairs in the photo give a direction for the eyes to move, along with the angled lines heading off into the distance. All the lines point towards the building in the center, which draws the eyes to it when starting at the bottom left or at the distant end of the E wing.

"Repetition" - The tables, the repeated pattern, create a sense of calm rather than pure form as pattern normally gives. The imbalance of bags on the left side help give the photo a more active feel.

"Pattern" - The square tile motif is repeated here, with the lighting and the drain as breaking effects to make the photo appear less plain.

"Emphasis" - Although not part of the building, the architect planned out this section, and placing a tree in the middle of an open field without bushes, against a red-white background, gives the tree a lot of emphasis as the one tall green object against a background of tan buildings.

"Proportion" - The positioning of the sinks relative to one another, and the high placement of the fire alarm, give the structure a sense of proportion in relation to the human body and its typical height.

"Variety" - The architect's use of organic and inorganic objects in designing this area not only give a variety in shapes and form, but also in the lighting, both natural and artificial.

"Rhythm" - The repeated use of square/rectangular shapes along the wall and in the foreground objects move the viewer towards the left at a "regular" pace, when first viewed from the right. The repeated forms act like commas in a sentence, causing the viewer to pause at each object for a split second, rather than just skim over.

"Unity" - The organic and inorganic structures complement each other, giving the entire scene a good balance between rounded and rough flora and smooth and linear buildings. Instead of fighting each other for space, the two kinds of forms complement each other, adding warmth and cold to each other.
